I was 8 years old and obsessed with horses. At the time I didn’t have much experience other watching others work them or the tourist attraction in Palo Duro Canyon. So when my friend invited us to her house to ride horses for her birthday I HAD to go!
As kids, little girls spend hours dreaming of horses and staring at clouds. We pretend we are flying through the fluffy giant marshmallows.
Well. We saddled up on the bright sunny day and headed off for a ride around the pasture, my horse was beautiful. A freshly washed and shiny black, completely gorgeous gelding. Names didn’t matter, I was a cowgirl princess about to conquer the Wild West all over again. Only what they didn’t tell me until afterwards was not to kick him. As we were trotting through the plains the rest of the group sped up.my horse decided to stay behind and eat some grass. So I kicked him. Bad, terrible choice. Off we flew until we hit the fence then he reared up! I tried to hang on for dear life but it didn’t work so when our heads came down and his back legs went up, off I flew. I remember thinking the clouds were pretty as I flew through the air and landed on my back with a thud.
I wish I could say that was the first and last I’ve been bucked off but it’s certainly not!! In the years since, I’ve been bucked more than a few few times. One thing I’m sure if though, is that flying is overrated!!
